Safe?  Not as safe as NOT installing it - but generally, yes.

https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

It's a third party product famous for having security holes and updated often - luckily automatically.  Open that web page in the web browser you use the most, download and install it if you need to use it somewhere.  If you don't need to use it, don't get it.

Follow up to my question....

I see I do have Quick Time...now not sure if these programs are similar duplicates.  I just installed Flash Player, but when given the option to "run" Norton displayed that the file is "inconclusive."  Help please???

Remove (uninstall) quicktime.  It was discontinued long ago.

Drop NORTON as well.  NORTON anything.  There are much better products out there for protection, most free.

Do not install Microsoft Silverlight.  This was Microsoft's attempt to compete with Adobe Flash.  Very few websites other than Microsoft sites used Silverlight and today even Microsoft has "deprecated" (i.e., discouraged developers from using) Silverlight.  As of February 2018, fewer than 0.1% sites used Silverlight.

Microsoft announced the end of life of Silverlight 5 in 2012.   In 2013, Microsoft announced that they had ceased development of Silverlight except for patches and bugfixes.    Microsoft has set the support end date for Silverlight 5 to be October 2021. Silverlight is no longer supported in Google Chromesince September 2015, and in Firefox since March 2017. There is no Silverlight plugin available for Microsoft Edge.

If you stumble across a website that still uses Silverlight, it will ask you to install it and you can decide then if you want to do so.

Jsssssssss

I'm a Windows 7 user too and I don't see any reason for installing Adobe Flash Player.

Why do you ask about it?

Please do not fall for weird pop-ups while browsing which urge you to update or to install Adobe Flash Player.

I suggest to take the time and to read: Best Practices for Safe Computing - Prevention of Malware Infection

Thanks to all of you who attemped to clarify this for me, but with all the conflicting views, I'm even more confused!  I have NOT "run" Flash Player yet & Quick Time has been trying to update for hours (minimized because I'm using my pc).

Jsssssss....thanks for the "Best Practices.....Infection" link too!   No, I did not fall for a pop-up asking me to install.   I tried to sign up for an upcoming informational video through my brokerage company and the window that came up had a "minimum something" with a test run in it.  I couldn't complete the test so assumed it had something to do with video/audio.  It's no longer asking me to do that so....apparently, I changed something!  Feeling very befuddled!!
